Aeration Technology in Shrimp Ponds

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the single most important variable in shrimp pond management. When DO drops below 4 mg/L, shrimp experience stress — and below 2 mg/L, mass mortality can occur within hours.

Traditional paddle-wheel aerators have been used in Bengal's shrimp ponds for decades, but newer diffused aeration and micro-bubble technology are now giving our farming partners a significant edge.

Diffused aeration systems push fine oxygen bubbles from the pond bottom upward, creating uniform DO distribution across the water column — unlike paddle-wheels, which primarily aerate the surface. This reduces stress zones and allows for higher stocking densities without compromising survival rates.

Timing matters as much as technology. DO levels naturally bottom out in the pre-dawn hours, after a night of algae and shrimp respiration with no photosynthesis replenishing oxygen. We equip partner farms with solar-powered DO sensors that trigger automatic aerator start-up if levels drop below a set threshold overnight, rather than relying on a farmer waking up to check manually.

Energy cost is the main adoption barrier for diffused systems, since blowers draw more continuous power than paddle-wheels. We've partly addressed this by helping partner farms move aerator run-schedules to off-peak electricity hours where the grid allows, and by piloting solar-hybrid blower units on a handful of ponds.

Across our partner farms that have adopted the new systems, we've seen average survival rates climb from around 72% to over 85% — a meaningful improvement that directly impacts profitability per harvest cycle.
